Contracted Educator Position: Occupational Therapist

Description:
The Children’s Museum of the Arts (CMA) is actively seeking an Occupational Therapist (OT) to work in collaboration with CMA teaching artists and facilitate the museum’s pilot Inclusive Weekend Art Classes for physically disabled children ages 7+ and their able-bodied siblings. This program is intended to make the museum’s art-making accessible to all needs and provide an opportunity for siblings to spend time with each other and with peers who have similar experiences. Each session will offer a new workshop that is designed by CMA’s teaching artists and facilitated by both the Teaching Artist and the OT.

After the 5-session pilot (taking place on designated Saturdays and Sundays in April and May) and summer assessment period, CMA aims to extend the program over the course of the 2012-2013 academic year.

Responsibilities:

  • Communicate with CMA’s Program Director to assess pre-registered participant needs and prep class programming accordingly.
  • Work closely with CMA teaching artist to adapt class curriculum, material and space set-up to accommodate special needs.
  • Support child participation to maximize the quality of experience.
  • Provide CMA teaching artists with professional development.
  • Consult CMA staff about establishing museum-wide accessible spaces, furniture, art material and equipment.
  • Communicate with participant parents, as needed.
  • Help CMA to recruit families and cultivate awareness of the program.
  • Help Program Director to assess the pilot Inclusive Class program and plan and recruit for an extended yearlong Inclusive Class program.

Qualifications: A qualified candidate will be a certified OT (not an OT assistant), having completed a bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy, passed the New York state licensing examination, the national certification examination*, and completed at least six months of supervised experience.

*Note: As of February 13, 2012, an OT in New York State must pass the national certification examination to become authorized. CMA will address on a case-by-case basis.

 Length of Job: Immediate: April 1-May 31 2012; possible extension into academic year 2012-2013 (September-May).

Compensation: Commensurate with experience

Numbers of Hours per Week: 4-6 hours/week

Art Colony Administrative Assistant

Description:
CMA’s summer Art Colonies camp provide one-to-two week day camp sessions that allow children ages 6 to 15 to immerse themselves in fun and focused arts programs led by professional teaching artists.

In our 9th year of our award-winning Summer Art Colony program, students can choose from 45 classes offered at CMA at 103 Charlton Street and on historic Governors Island. This position would assist in the daily operations of our Governors Island Art Colonies, Monday – Friday, from June 11th-August 31st.

Governors Island Specific Duties:

  • Manage the daily check in and check out of students
  • Serve as the main administrative contact for teaching artists, staff & parents on CMA’s Governors Island office
  • Communicate with parents daily about camp schedule, policies, and procedures
  • Assist teachers in classroom activities and during free time throughout the day as needed
  • Document classes for the CMA Blog
  • Coordinate “Final Friday” art exhibitions/screenings and communication with parents and teaching artist

Administrative Duties:

  • Assist in the set up of Art Colony program (i.e. organizing supplies, office management, & shipments)
  • Prepare weekly class packets
  • Update class lists, sign in & out sheets, and calendar each Monday
  • Continually assist in organization and recording of Art Colony materials and handouts
  • Help organize and track children’s health forms and health information
  • Track and record Summer Art Colony evaluation information

Qualifications: Bachelors Degree is required. 2-years experience working in an education, camp, or arts organization is preferred. Candidate must have strong written, communication and customer service skills. Must have experience working with Microsoft Office and database software, experience with Adobe Suite a plus but not required.

Length of Job: June 1st to September 2nd

Compensation: Commensurate with experience

Numbers of Hours per Week: 35-45 (some flexibility, pending candidate)

ARTogether Visit Facilitator

The ARTogether program provides families who are receiving preventive services, in foster care working toward reunification, or building kinship relationships to bond, interact, and play together in a comfortable and positive environment. ARTogether is designed to provide engaging and interactive community-based visits for families with children ages 1-12 years old. The program is currently seeking to hire a Cantonese and Mandarin speaking facilitator on an hourly basis. The position provides an opportunity to gain experience working in a unique community-based, family-centered program with families from the Chinese immigrant community who are navigating NYC’s child welfare system. The facilitator will be scheduled to host visits on weekends and flexible weekend hours are required.

Responsibilities:

  •  Engaging families in art and imaginative play activities through out the museum
  •  Developing individualized art directives for families
  • Working with participating heads of household to establish program participation goals
  •  Providing feedback and support to families to ensure progress toward family goals
  • Documenting activities, observations, and family progress
  • Collaborating with referring workers to best serve participants’ needs
  • Participating in community outreach opportunities

Qualifications:

  • Fluent in both Mandarin and Cantonese
  • Flexible weekend schedule
  • Art Therapy, Social Service, or Human Service background
  • Must have experience working with children and families
  • Strong documenting skills
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite

Rolling Basis Applications

Teaching Artist: As an ever-expanding exhibition and art-making space, Children’s Museum of the Arts (CMA) accepts applications on a rolling basis from talented teaching artists working in the fine arts, media arts, and early childhood fields. CMA teaching artist’s lead hands-on art-making activities and workshops and classes for children and families throughout the year. Eligible candidates may be placed in short and long-term opportunities in CMA’s on-site and school and community programs throughout New York. Teaching artists report directly to their respective Department Manger (Fine Art, Media Lab, or Early Childhood) and work closely to collaborate with fellow teaching artists. Within the framework of CMA’s programming, Teaching Artists are encouraged to incorporate their own art practices into workshop designs and curriculum. CMA teaching artist positions are hourly. The hourly rate will vary based on TA experience and specialization and the program. Availability on weekends and occasional evening hours are preferred. Starting rate at $16.25/hr, or based on experience. The mission of the Children’s Museum of the Arts is to extend the benefits of the arts to all children and their communities and to secure the future of the arts by inspiring and championing the next generation of artists and art lovers.

CMA seeks artists representing an expertise in a wide-variety of mediums.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be outgoing, energetic, self-motivated, and passionate about art.
  • Minimum of with 2 years experience teaching art to children between the ages of 10 months-15 yrs.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, Film/Media or Multi-media is required, an M.A. or M.F.A in related field is preferred.
  •  Must have strong people skills and the ability to work well with both children and adults.
  •  Must be able to work independently as well as collaboratively on projects with staff and students.
  •  Knowledge of NYC arts community as well as an appreciation and knowledge for traditional and contemporary artists and practices (in Fine Art or Media Arts)
