Arts to Lyfe
In partnership with the New York City Department of Education’s LYFE Program (Living for the Young Family through Education), CMA provides subsidized comprehensive services and childcare to low-income teenage parents, ages 12-18, working to complete their public high school education. CMA’s 2011 Arts to LYFE program serves over 70 families and takes place in five sites throughout New York.
Arts to LYFE engages at-risk families in self-expressive activities and learning that they would not otherwise receive and brings quality arts education critical to advancing sensory, fine motor, and cognitive development in infants. Additionally, CMA’s early childhood facilitators provide professional development to LYFE staff and offer training to adolescent parents to help build confidence and encourage involvement in their children’s learning. Arts to LYFE includes low-pressure, private, visits to CMA, which help families to feel comfortable in a museum environment and to use CMA and other cultural institutions as resources for learning.
