SUMMARY:Misaki Kawai – Love from Mt. Pom Pom
DESCRIPTION:The Children’s Museum of the Arts (CMA) is proud to present an interdisciplinary art exhibition of new work by the internationally recognized Japanese artist Misaki Kawai\, entitled Love from Mt. Pom Pom. Utilizing painting\, drawing\, sculpture\, installation\, artist books and zines\, as well as animation and video\, Misaki will transform CMA’s gallery into an imagined world named ‘Mt. Pom Pom’\, where giant fuzzy animals and other colorful characters run wild. CMA is committed to celebrating the artist in every child and we are especially pleased to find friends who feel the same. In her work\, Misaki encourages both adults and young people to make art by emphasizing that the most important thing for an artist is not their ability to draw technically well\, but their ability to trust their instincts. This ethos stems from Misaki’s own approach to art making\, which is connected to the concept of “heta-uma\,” a Japanese manga style that is technically bad (i.e.\, naïve or amateurish) but produces a successful result through the artist’s intuitive powers of expression. The exhibit’s message\, which aligns with CMA’s approach to art and art making\, is that everyone can be an artist regardless of skill or technical ability. Misaki’s past exhibitions have included bizarre and beautiful installations such as an earth-themed amusement park in outer space\, a towering treehouse for glam rockers\, a beach party with surfers riding a gigando wave\, and a fleet of various-sized airplanes carrying rock and roll bands from the 1960s. The esteemed New York Times art critic Roberta Smith described Misaki Kawai’s first solo show at Kenny Schachter Contemporary as a “tour-de-force debut”. Since then\, Misaki has gone on to exhibit at major international venues\, including solo shows at the Malmo Konsthall\, Sweden\, the Institute of Contemporary Art\, Boston\, and P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center\, and group shows at Deitch Projects\, Cheim & Read\, The Valencian Institute of Modern Art\, Spain\, The Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston\, and the Japan Society\, to name a few. Misaki Kawai is represented by Take Ninagawa in Japan and Gallery Loyal in Sweden. Watch how this exhibition came together in our behind-the-scenes documentary\, "Live" From Mt. Pom Pom. Support Support for this show is generously provided by The Ackerman Family\, and in part\, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs. SUMMARY:Make Art (In) Public
DESCRIPTION:The Children’s Museum of the Arts is proud to present the exhibition Make Art (In) Public\, a survey of art in the public realm. As the inaugural show in CMA’s new\, larger facility on Charlton Street\, Make Art (In) Public speaks to qualities with which CMA closely identifies: the accessibility of the arts; being a product of and a contributor to the cultural fabric of New York City; and the impact of the arts on building and bettering communities. At this pivotal moment in the museum’s history\, we can think of no better art form to honor in our new space and new gallery. Make Art (In) Public presents a survey of artists past and present whose work collectively demonstrates a variety of methods artists employ to stage their art in the public realm. Participating artists include Keith Haring\, Swoon\, Christo & Jeanne-Claude\, Friedensreich Hundertwasser\, Remed\, Tranqui Yanqui and Moondog. Going above and beyond the call of duty to make art more accessible to the public\, these artists affect positive change within the communities they work. They further the dialogue between artist and audience and through the immensity of their vision and talent they inspire new generations of artists to turn their dreams into reality. Through this exhibition\, museum visitors will engage with ideas about how the arts can bring communities together\, foster dialogue\, and contribute to the beauty of daily life\, as well as the ways in which early public artists continue to inform the efforts of contemporary artists. Gallery Workshops Join us for a series of hands-on workshops inspired by this exhibit: Art Speak: Combining a gallery talk with a hands-on workshop\, these sessions run Thursday\, Saturday and Sunday and include a discussion of the exhibition led by a CMA Teaching Artist along with a hands-on art project. Guided Workshops: These ongoing Teaching Artist-led workshops take place in the gallery Thursday through Sunday and feature a new workshop each day inspired by the exhibition. Public Art is everywhere. Send your pictures of art in public to submit@makeartinpublic.com and we will add to our virtual public art gallery\, www.makeartinpublic.com. For educators Please see the debut of our new Teacher's Curriculum and Exhibition Guide\, which provide a more intimate view of the exhibition's artists as well as offer many creative and exciting workshops to try with your students. Support Support for this show is generously provided by The New York City Department of Cultural Affairs Special Thanks To The Collection of James Cottrell and Joseph Lovett The Keith Haring Foundation Muna Tseng Dance Projects\, Inc.
