CMA’s after school program offers semester-long classes in a range of mediums for young artists ages 5 to 12. Taught by professional teaching artists, these classes are designed to teach and build upon age-appropriate art-making skills while encouraging creative and imaginative expression.

Explore a variety of printmaking techniques through historical and contemporary examples. In this class, you will create colorful monotypes inspired by artist Jim Dine and relief prints like Hokusai and the Ukiyo-E, as well as Islamic tile patters, Andy-Warhol inspired silk screen prints, and more. Create prints on materials like paper and fabric. While you build your skills in printmaking techniques, you will also gain a fundamental knowledge of art history.
This class will introduce you to the unique style of ‘technicollaborative storytelling‘ that has been fostered in the CMA Media Lab for seven years. Media Lab programs extend up to age 15 and this class provides a great introduction to the world of animation and filmmaking. Develop skills in character development and narration as you collaborate with other campers on a short feature film. Experiment with character drawings, puppetry and sculpture, set building, sound recording, and basic stop-motion animation. Films from Media Lab programs have been featured in the Tribeca Film Festival, Big Movies for Little Kids, and the New York International Children’s Film Festival.
Build valuable skills in script writing, storyboarding, and character design as you explore the process of stop motion animated filmmaking. Learn how to record music and dialogue for your characters, explore how to construct an animated set, and use a variety of tools and materials to illustrate, sculpt and photograph your characters. In the process of collaborating on a film with other campers, you will learn the fundamentals of software such as iStopmotion, Dragon, Garage Band, and Final Cut. Past films from Animated Film have been featured at the Tribeca Film Festival, Big Movies for Little Kids Series, and the New York International Children’s Film Festival.
This foundations class introduces you to fine art fundamentals and techniques through the exploration of notable, diverse artists as well as a rage of drawing and painting mediums. Through a series of different projects such as drawing from life, landscape painting, and portraiture, you will be exposed to the fundamentals of color, line, texure, shape, and more. Leave class with your own set of unique work!
Hone your techincal abilities in the timeless art forms of drawing and painting. Using CMA’s studio space, you will learn fundamental elements of drawing and painting such as color mixing, contour line drawing and observation work. You will also be introduced to professional-grade materials such as charcoal, graphite, pastels, watercolor and acrylic paints. .
This class focuses on further developing technique and skill while encouraging you to develop a personal style. Using CMA’s studio space, you will build artist talents in composition, perspective, shading, organizing a palette, and working from observation. Work with professional materials such as charcoal, conte crayon, gouache, and acrylic paints as you create complex figure drawings and still life paintings. You will have the opportunity to curate the final showing of your work at the end of the semester!
This class will introduce you to various techniques of stop motion animation including claymation, pixilation and paper cut-out. Under the guidance of Teaching Artists, you will use computers, cameras, iStopmotion software, and a variety of tools and materials to create abstract, narrative and experimental films. You will work collaboratively on a series of short vignettes highlighting the different techniques learned in class. Inspired by animated films such as Wallace and Gromit, Chicken Run, and A Nightmare Before Christmas, you will also have the opportunity to collaborate on hands-on art projects, character building, set design, and story development. This class is good for beginners and graduates of Exploring Media Lab.
Take on the role of director as you explore the fascinating process of filmmaking. From story development to post-production, Teaching Artists will lead your class through a collaborative process of script writing, storyboarding, character development, costume making, and performance. Try your hand at directing, cinematography, musical scoring, and editing, and finish the week with a collaborative film to share with your friends! During the process, you will be introduced to filmmaking software Final Cut.
This visual arts class, taught exclusively in Japanese, explores the process of using both traditional and non-traditional art materials. Learn classic art making techniques such as origami and drawing as well as contemporary methods of installation and animation. You will receive your own sketchbook to use for independent brainstorming and sketching. You will also collaborate on larger projects, including mixed media sculptures and large scale paper foldings. For over 15 years, this class has taken an innovative approach to manipulating art materials. Teaching Artist Niizeki Hiromi has exhibited her installations with discarded materials in New York and Los Angeles.
This foundations class introduces you to a variety of essential art techniques by studying a diverse selection of notable artists as well as exposing you to a range of art mediums in drawing and sculpture. Through a series of art projects such as abstract line drawing, portraiture, wire sculpture, and cardboard construction, you will be exposed to fundamental elements of art including line, shape, form, and composition.
Take your design skills to the next level in this printmaking course. You will create complex monotypes, relief prints, and silk screen prints and experiment with 3D mediums such as wood and clay. Leave this class with a printed tote bag and your own prints!

In this class, you will be introduced to professional illustration techniques through a series of lessons designed to build your skills and portfolio. As you analyze the concept of narrative, you will experiment with methods in advertising, graphic novel cartooning, sequential storyboarding, and character design. Breaking beyond the single-page illustration, you will learn book-making fundamentals and pop-up paper engineering, as well as digital mediums such as stop motion animation.
