Group Visits
Group visits allow for schools and camps to experience a personalized, educational museum visit. Led by our team of teaching artists, group visits start with a tour of the gallery, engaging the students in discussion about the exhibition. After the gallery tour, the teaching artists will lead your students in an art workshop of your choosing. CMA programming supports NYC DOE’s Blueprint Standards for Teaching and Learning in the Arts and is flexible to accommodate any special interests and/or needs your group may have. See below for more information on the current workshop selection.
Each group visit is staffed with two teaching artists. We ask that you please bring 1 chaperone for every 8 students.

Group Visit Workshop Options
CMA develops hands-on workshops that support the DOE’s Blueprint and are inspired by our current exhibition, Misaki Kawai, Love From Mt. Pom Pom. Please choose from a selection of age-appropriate workshops below:
Intro to Art: In this process-oriented workshop, young artists work with a variety of art making materials, including paint, glue and drawing tools. This WEE Arts inspired early childhood workshop promotes experimentation, exploration and creative thinking.
Curriculum benchmarks are based on the NYC DOE’s Teaching and Learning Blueprint in Visual Arts:
- Identifying new vocabulary
- Control of paint media and various brushes
- Experimenting with mixing colors, textures, and shapes
- Experimenting with various drawing tools (oil pastels, pencils, colored pencils, crayons) and basic printing tools
- Using lines and color to convey expression
Foundations in Art: These workshops are process-oriented and creative introductions to core artistic mediums. Choose from:
Mixed Media & Sculpture – In this workshop, students will work with a variety of materials such as model magic, fabric and modeling clay to create a three-dimensional sculpture. Students will build on their sculpture, using different collage materials to add surface designs.
Drawing and Painting – Students will use an array of drawing and painting materials, from craypas to watercolors, to create a two-dimensional work of art. Drawing inspiration from our current exhibition, and using art fundamentals, students will discover the subject matter of their work.
Printmaking – Students will carve, indent or cut to create their own stryofoam printing plate or rubber printing block. Students experiment with original pattern and subject, and experience the medium’s paradoxical ability to produce multiples of the same design, but never the same copy twice!
Pixilation – A stop motion technique where live actors are used as a frame-by-frame subject in an animated film, at CMA students will draw inspiration from our current exhibit and create their own story using their bodies and self made props. This workshop is offered on Tuesdays only.
Curriculum benchmarks are based on the NYC DOE’s Teaching and Learning Blueprint in Visual Arts and the Moving Image:
- Hone observation skills and discuss works of art
- Compare and contrast works of art that focus on the same theme
- Work in two-dimensional and three-dimensional art forms
- Extend knowledge of art media and compositional elements
- Identify basic elements of visual storytelling (sound, movement, lighting color)
Advanced Workshops: These workshops are skill-based and technical explorations of particular art mediums and professional materials and equipment. Choose from:
Drawing & Painting – In this intensive workshop, students focus on medium and technique. Using high quality materials, students will focus on a particular drawing or painting skill and create a two-dimensional work of art.
Printmaking – Students focus on the use of color and design by practicing the technique of silk-screening to create multiple prints of their original design.
Stop Motion Animation - Students explore the moving image through a variety of 2D and 3D animation techniques, using claymation, found-object animation, and paper cutouts.
Puppetry– Drawing inspiration from our current exhibition, students will design and produce their own alter-ego puppet. The workshop will culminate with a recorded puppet performance.
Museum Education – Prompted to consider technique, subject and medium, students focus on select work(s) in exhibition and sketch their own interpretations. In a group share thereafter, students discuss their own creative choices, and compare and contrast each other’s different styles.
Curriculum benchmarks are based on the NYC DOE’s Teaching and Learning Blueprint in Visual Arts:
- Extend knowledge of art media, compositional and design elements, and technique
- Deepen imaginative capacities
- Utilize the principles of art
- Reflect on the process of making art
- Access primary resources in the city
- Explore technical skills, filming processes and sound-recording techniques
