CMA brings multi-session free art programs for children living in transitional housing. CMA’s Teaching Artists bring art materials and workshops to the participants, ages 3-15, inviting them to explore the art of weaving, printmaking and sculpture. Each program culminates with an exhibition of the participating children’s artwork and a reception for families and friends. CMA has partnered with the Henry Street Settlement’s Urban Family Center (UFC) and the Urban Transitional Residency Center in Brownsville Brooklyn, and has received generous funding support from the Rose M. Badgeley Residuary Charitable Trust and the support of Rosemary & Michael Ryan.
RESTART Program History:
In the spring and summer of 2011, CMA brought two 6-week long free art programs for children living in Henry Street Settlement’s Urban Family Center (UFC) and the Urban Transitional Residency Center in Brownsville Brooklyn. These centers provide transitional housing for homeless families and survivors of domestic violence and their children. Serving nearly 50 children, CMA’s Teaching Artists brought materials and workshops to the participants, ages 3-15, inviting them to explore the art of weaving, printmaking and sculpture. With generous support from the Rose M. Badgeley Residuary Charitable Trust, in fall 2011 CMA extended its Urban Family Center program over an additional six-month-long period and culminated the partnership with an expanded exhibition of the children’s artwork and a reception for families and friends. In spring 2012 through spring 2013, with generous support from Rosemary and Michael Ryan, the UFC Restart program will continue to provide participants with a wide variety of art-making experiences, and opportunities to curate and exhibit work. CMA will establish an Art Cabinet of materials and resources for the community room. Families can access these materials and continue to make artwork with one another of their own. Every month participants and their families will celebrate a “Final Friday” exhibition.
October 2012-April 2013, CMA will bring its Restart program back to the Urban Transitional Residency Center in Brownsville Brooklyn.
