About the Role
Children’s Museum of the Arts (CMA) seeks practicing artists with experience teaching students ages 4-15 for in-person part-time seasonal teaching opportunities with public and private schools or community-based organizations.
CMA Artist Instructors uphold CMA’s mission by providing engaging learning opportunities through the arts for students in school settings and within community-based organizations. After receiving comprehensive training in stop-motion animation and curriculum development, the Artist Instructor will provide in-person media arts programming to school-aged students.
Please note that applicants must be eligible to work in the United States and must be located in the New York City area for the duration of the season.
Minimum one year’s experience teaching art to children in a classroom setting
Experience teaching art to children with disabilities or in another language is a plus
Experience adjusting and augmenting in-person methods to virtual instruction, as needed
Experience scaffolding and pacing instruction for a variety of ages, developmental abilities, and prior art-making experience
The ability to write and implement sequential arts lessons as a part of curriculum design, embedded with complimentary classroom management and inclusion strategies
Comfortable teaching a range of grades in one day
Eager to learn and incorporate CMA pedagogy, as well as new tools, equipment and techniques
Excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills, including the ability to work effectively with educators, as well as with diverse groups of students
The drive to solve problems creatively and independently
Prior to the first day of teaching, Artist Instructors are required to complete a background check and fingerprinting clearance with the New York City Department of Education. Candidates who already have clearance are preferred.
Proof of COVID-19 vaccination is required.
BA or BFA in Studio Art, Fine Art, Art Education, or related field preferred
Lead in-person lessons in the media arts, particularly stop-motion animation, to children, including those with an Autism Spectrum Disorder or other social disabilities, children with physical disabilities, children with developmental or learning disabilities, or those who primarily speak another language.
Encourage students to apply their observations, reflections, critical thinking, and creativity to making their own works of art.
Design and implement age-appropriate, multi-sensory, and sequential curriculum based on CMA’s pedagogy Look, Make, Show.
Implement effective classroom management strategies and an organized class structure.
Motivate students by using interdisciplinary themes and making connections to their lives and the world around them.
Submit curriculum, reflections, visual documentation, and any other required paperwork to CMA Programs Staff by a required due date.
Communicate effectively with Program Staff and follow all CMA procedures.
Participate in professional development training and meetings as required.
This is an hourly, part-time position.
This position reports to the Community & School Liaison.
$36 per hour
