  • Imaginative Multimedia Collages

5/5/23 Reflections Imaginative Multimedia Collages Click to expand media gallery. Open Studio at Pier 57 is abuzz with young artists creating imaginative multimedia collages for The Lemonade Stand , a selling exhibition of artwork created by children at NADA New York art fair later this month. Kids focused on images, words, and letters that caught their eye as they layered shapes to create larger forms. They even signed Certificates of Authencity to ensure that their artworks were properly registered for the real life art fair. One young artist described her collage as "looking like New York City" Another artist explained that he pieced together his collage to "make it look like the snake is shooting out magic with a wand surrounded by fire." 4/15/24 Artists in Schools Shimmering Backdrops at PS 347 Dispatches from CMA Artist Instructor Talisa Velazquez's second grade class at PS 347. Click to expand media gallery. Students at PS 347 in Manhattan are finishing up the backdrops for their stop-motion animations. One of our longtime school partners, PS 347 serves deaf, hard-of-hearing, children of deaf adults, and hearing students. Ultra tactile materials like shimmering translucent paper and fuzzy fabrics proved to be irresistible to students! They wanted to spend hours assembling their backdrops. Next up, students will design their characters and use modeling clay to bring their ideas to life. CMA Artist Instructors JT Baldassarre and Talisa Velazquez It’s spring in New York City, which means CMA’s Artist Instructors are hard at work in public schools across the boroughs teaching fine arts and stop-motion animation to students who lack access to the arts otherwise. • Vegetable Prints!

1/22/24 Artists in Schools Vegetable Prints! Dispatches from CMA Resident Artist Maria D. Rapicavoli's after school class at Hudson Guild. Click to expand media gallery. Kids had permission to play with their food when they made 2D vegetable prints! First, Maria demonstrated how to cut and carve vegetables and divide them into sections. They selected from potatoes, tomatoes, jalapeños, cauliflower, ginger, onion, garlic, peppers, zucchini, and mushrooms [all vegetables were on the edge of expiration so no food was wasted!] Next, they dipped the sections into acrylic paint and used them as stamps to create original patterns and compositions. Kids were fascinated by this novel use of vegetables, even though some could not stand the pungent smell of garlic and onions! Nonetheless, they powered through and created truly compelling works of art. Maria's work at Hudson Guild is supported by the Emergency Arts Education Fund , which provides free arts education to NYC school communities whose art programs have been decimated by recent budget cuts. Children’s Museum of the Arts’ three Residents Artists are currently implementing ambitious arts curriculum at each of our partner sites throughout New York City: Hudson Guild in Chelsea, Sid Miller Academy in Crown Heights, and Children’s Workshop School in the East Village. Come spring, our residents will showcase their students' work through exhibitions and installations across the city. Learn how you can support the work of our residents here . Do you have a favorite memory of making art as a child? I remember scribbling all over my school notebooks, and of course the walls and even the furniture at my childhood home in Mexico. I always got into some trouble with my mom at home! What advice would you give to young artists who wish to pursue an art practice? Art is a way of speaking your mind when words can’t be found. Dare to speak freely through your art and trust that a powerful message lies within it. How does working with children inspire you? Children are the most precious gift for humankind. It is our responsibility to guide and empower them towards their biggest potential, especially those children who live in disadvantaged communities where access to art and culture is not always available. When did you first know you were going to be an artist? Growing up, I felt I had one call only: to become an attorney just like my mom and dad. However, deep within myself I always realized I had a thirst and hunger to express myself through an artistic lens. Thus, throughout law school and through my practice as an attorney, I always looked for ways to learn and cultivate my artistic self.
