Do you have a favorite memory of making art as a child? One of my favorite childhood memories is that when I was about five, my mom made a small version of our house with me out of paper. What advice would you give to young artists who wish to pursue an art practice? You're wonderful. How does working with children inspire you? I don't work with children, but do enjoy teaching college students – and very much enjoy having a child. Both things take me out of myself in a big way. Artwork by Liana's child, age 2 When did you first know you were going to be an artist? I've been drawing since I was ten months old or so. I'm not sure I ever “knew-knew” I'd be an artist, and I'm not sure I know now. Can you describe a formative experience visiting a museum or gallery? I have good memories of being taken to an earlier iteration of MoMA when I was a kid. My mom used to take me out of school once a year and we'd go to see museums in the city. We would always stop at Barnes and Noble on the Upper West Side, which is where we parked.
