    Open Studio: Unusual Sculptures Inspired by Phyllida Barlow [July 31] Free Community Artmaking Monday, July 31, 2023 3 PM to 5 PM Pier 57 Pier 57, 11th Avenue, New York, NY, USA Media Inquiries: adam@culturalcounsel.com RSVP This session takes inspiration from British sculptor Phyllida Barlow ’s current exhibition on view in City Hall Park. We’ll borrow from Barlow’s playful and rule-breaking style to challenge traditional sculptural values by placing an everyday object, such as a chair or bed, in surprising space. About Open Studio at Pier 57 Taking place Mondays and Thursdays, Open Studio at Pier 57 invites children to explore hands-on projects across a wide range of artistic disciplines. Specially designed for children on the Autism Spectrum but welcoming to all, each Inclusives session is multisensory focused. Participants will explore art materials (such as clay, paper, or textiles) at their own pace alongside movement breaks and ample time for storytelling and social interaction. What To Expect Sessions are led by CMA Artist Instructors Emma Waldman and JT Baldassarre and are inspired by historic and contemporary New York City art and artists. The program’s curriculum is rooted in accessible artmaking practices and Children’s Museum of the Arts’ pedagogy of Look, Make, Share. Take a peek at one of our virtual Inclusives lessons, catered to children with Autism, that families can try at home: here ! While caregivers are welcome to stay with their children, families are encouraged to enjoy the extraordinary setting of Pier 57 in the adjacent Family Living Room for the duration of the session. Is it trees and grass, the surrounding community, or something more? How does a park make us feel or and what does it inspire us to do? Join CMA Artist in Residence ingrid romero in Spring Street Park to create urban landscapes rendered in chalk and on paper. ingrid will work alongside children and families to provide inspiration, make art, and pose critical thinking questions surrounding the concept of a park as we know it and what we may imagine it to be. This event is recommended for ages 12 & under.   • Kylah Hopkins

    Kylah Hopkins Arts Coordinator P396K Sid Miller Academy ​ Kylah N. Hopkins is the Arts Coordinator at P396K Sid Miller Academy in Brooklyn, NY. Her love of dance started at an early age and allowed her to spend some of the best years of her life as a Dance Major at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School for Music, Arts and the Performing Arts. She graduated from Hunter College, CUNY with a Bachelor of Arts in Dance and is a graduate of Pace University, where she received her Masters of Science in Education with a dual certification. She has grown in her professional opportunities from being a paraprofessional, self-contained Special Education classroom teacher, Social Studies through Dance teacher, and now in her current role as leader of the Arts Department. Kylah continually strives to connect her passion for the Arts and Special Education, making it accessible for ALL.     Larkin Grimm Artist Instructor, Partnerships Children's Museum of the Arts ​ Larkin Grimm is a visual artist, composer, and animator who studied with Kehinde Wiley, Frank Gehry, and documentarian D.A. Pennebaker at Yale University. Larkin has been teaching art, filmmaking, animation, and music production at Children's Museum of the Arts for seven years. Larkin has a child on the Autism spectrum and particularly enjoys teaching other special needs children and their families that they are capable of more than they ever imagined as artists and citizens of the world. As a musician, Larkin has released six solo albums, toured internationally, and collaborated with renowned musicians such as Stromae, Patti Smith, Tony Visconti, Dirty Projectors, and Naama Tsabar. Enjoy art activities, cocktails, and brunch boxes from Maman during CMA's Valentine's Day Art Party on Sunday, February 11 from 10 AM to 12:30 PM at Cricket's Candy Creations in Manhattan.     4/12/24 Artists in Schools Zine Making: The Final Creations! Dispatches from CMA Resident Artist Noormah Jamal's fifth grade class at Children's Workshop School. Click to expand media gallery. Noormah Jamal's fifth graders at Children’s Workshop School completed their zine projects and donated their finished creations to the school library for future students to see. Round of applause to these budding writers, illustrators, and publishers! Noormah’s work at Children’s Workshop School is supported by the Emergency Arts Education Fund , which provides free arts education to NYC school communities whose art programs have been decimated by recent budget cuts. Children’s Museum of the Arts’ three Residents Artists are currently implementing ambitious arts curriculum at each of our partner sites throughout New York City: Hudson Guild in Chelsea, Sid Miller Academy in Crown Heights, and Children’s Workshop School in the East Village.
