Papier Mâché Part 2: Manicures, Basquiat's Crown, and the Empire State Building

Back at it! Students resumed their papier mâché projects. 

They added additional strips of paper to their base, smoothing them down and overlapping the strips to ensure adequate coverage and structural strength. 

Once dry, students used acrylic paint to cover their structures and acrylic markers for fine detail. 

When one student expressed interest in creating fake nails with a manicure, Maria remembered she had a wooden model hand that she had brought from her studio. The student was thrilled to have a mannequin hand for her project, and meticulously crafted the nails, even using real nail polish to make it as realistic as possible!

The final result was nothing short of amazing. 

Another fifth grader made a face with a crown.

He remembered Basquiat’s signature crown from a lesson back in December and wanted to recreate it. 

Several students made Valentine's Day gifts, like this blobby blue heart trophy and a creative take on a long stem rose.

Another fifth grader recreated the Empire State Building using a wooden base and aluminum foil box.

Maria's work at Hudson Guild is supported by the Emergency Arts Education Fund, which provides free arts education to NYC school communities whose art programs have been decimated by recent budget cuts.
