  • Airplanes, Chimneys, and Ballerinas

1/5/24 Artists in Schools Airplanes, Chimneys, and Ballerinas Dispatches from CMA Resident Artist Noormah Jamal's fifth grade class at Children's Workshop School. Click to expand media gallery. Students returned from winter break eager to begin their first 3D assignment – free standing cardboard sculptures! Having worked with shape and form in previous assignments, students were comfortable moving into the three-dimensional realm. Balance was key as students learned how to create joints and slits to assemble their parts. After composing and making their forms, students painted and assembled their works. Some were abstract, while others resembled lifelike forms like airplanes and chimneys. This was also the first time that students worked in pairs. They loved it and requested more group assignments! Noormah’s work at Children’s Workshop School is supported by the Emergency Arts Education Fund , which provides free arts education to NYC school communities whose art programs have been decimated by recent budget cuts. Children’s Museum of the Arts’ three Residents Artists are currently implementing ambitious arts curriculum at each of our partner sites throughout New York City: Hudson Guild in Chelsea, Sid Miller Academy in Crown Heights, and Children’s Workshop School in the East Village. Come spring, our residents will showcase their students' work through exhibitions and installations across the city. Learn how you can support the work of our residents here . • Visiting the Whitney Biennial

4/10/24 Artists in Schools Visiting the Whitney Biennial CMA Resident Artist Maria D. Rapicavoli visited the Whitney Biennial with her third graders from Hudson Guild. Click to expand media gallery. Once again, we are indebted to the Whitney Museum of American Art for graciously welcoming our third grade students from Hudson Guild to tour their biggest and brightest exhibition – the Whitney Biennial. We are especially grateful to Jano Provinciano , who thoughtfully and patiently led our students through their first ever museum visit! Students loved getting up close and personal with Nikita Gale 's TEMPO RUBATO (STOLEN TIME) . We even journeyed outside to view Kiyan Williams ' Ruins of Empire II or The Earth Swallows the Master's House and considered why the American flag is hung upside down. Back inside, students made art directly in the gallery inspired by the work of Mavis Pusey , a Jamaican-born artist who, like our students, spent a large part of her life in the Chelsea neighborhood, not far from the Whitney. Mavis Pusey with her work “Within Manhattan.”Courtesy of Mavis Pusey Archive They remarked on the importance of shifting perspective and tilting your head when absorbing an artwork. Thank you to everyone at the Whitney for welcoming us to the space to see such inspiring work — and create our own! • Zine Making: Frame-by-Frame Layouts

3/22/24 Artists in Schools Zine Making: Frame-by-Frame Layouts Dispatches from CMA Resident Artist Noormah Jamal's fifth grade class at Children's Workshop School. Click to expand media gallery. Students are embarking on the most anticipated project of the school year – zine making! They have been looking forward to this assignment for weeks. For the first part of this multi-day project, students worked in small groups to come up with the subject of their zine and create a rough draft. They assigned roles within their group and coordinated with each other to come up with reference images. Students were thrilled to work with carbon paper (a new medium!) and took quickly to the “frame by frame” layout. Some students are tapping into fan fiction and mixing characters from their favorite movies and cartoons into one storyline. Noormah’s work at Children’s Workshop School is supported by the Emergency Arts Education Fund , which provides free arts education to NYC school communities whose art programs have been decimated by recent budget cuts. • "Art is about chewing on the question for as long as possible."

10/5/23 Interviews "Art is about chewing on the question for as long as possible." Artist Adam Sultan on drawing leopards as a child and making art as a superpower. Click to expand media gallery. Great artists make artists. And to prove that point, over 70 of today's greatest have contributed their work in support of Children's Museum of the Arts' Emergency Arts Education Fund , establishing utterly ambitious art programs in New York City schools that need them most. Bidding for the online auction concludes Thursday, October 19 at 12 PM EDT . Bid now. Bid often. Bid here. Below, meet auction artist Adam Sultan . Adam's son working on a painting Do you have a favorite memory of making art as a child? In third or fourth grade I had to write a book report about leopards. I drew a leopard on the cover using colored pencils that I still remember. I got completely sucked in while I was making it. It may have been the first real art I made. What advice would you give to young artists who wish to pursue an art practice? Don't waste any time making work you don't like, or making things you think you "should be" making. The world has enough of that. Don't be afraid of your work looking like nothing or looking like everyone else's. It never does for long. How does working with children inspire you? It's a cliche, but kids are the best artists! Children never stop playing, and play is the best way to chew on a question without rushing to the answer too quickly. Art is about chewing on the question for as long as possible. When did you first know you were going to be an artist? At a young age, when I saw what some of my siblings or cousins could draw. It seemed like a superpower.
