  • Figure Drawing and Line Quality

3/1/24 Artists in Schools Figure Drawing and Line Quality Dispatches from CMA Resident Artist Noormah Jamal's fifth grade class at Children's Workshop School. Click to expand media gallery. This week was all about figure drawing, focusing on line quality using pencil. Students honed their observational skills as they looked at images of different poses. They focused on simple lines showing movement, proportion, and weight placement of the body. They also compared and contrasted reference images by David Hockney and Alexander Trifonov, noting how Hockney’s work is more representational, while Trifonov's work leans more towards abstraction. Alexander Trifonov, Tango, oil on canvas When asked to describe Hockney’s work, one student exclaimed “There's a depressed guy sitting with his cat clearly not happy with the lady he's with.” It’s fair to say that our students have top notch observational skills! David Hockney, Mr and Mrs Clark and Percy, 1970-71, acrylic paint on canvas. Collection Tate Modern, London © David Hockney Noormah’s work at Children’s Workshop School is supported by the Emergency Arts Education Fund , which provides free arts education to NYC school communities whose art programs have been decimated by recent budget cuts. Children’s Museum of the Arts’ three Residents Artists are currently implementing ambitious arts curriculum at each of our partner sites throughout New York City: Hudson Guild in Chelsea, Sid Miller Academy in Crown Heights, and Children’s Workshop School in the East Village. • Animal Portraits at PS 46Q

4/9/24 Artists in Schools Animal Portraits at PS 46Q Dispatches from CMA Artist Instructor Emma Waldman's second grade class at PS 46Q. Click to expand media gallery. PS 46Q in Bayside, Queens buzzed with excitement as CMA Artist Instructor Emma Waldman wrapped up her five-week fine arts program for second graders! For their final project, students painted canvases using various marks and patterns that they learned throughout the weeks. They chose to depict their favorite animals, including owls, cats, and giant lizards! They loved experimenting with paints and learning more about themselves (and others!) through art. One student declared “Can we keep having the class?” which is a wonderful testament to the program! It’s spring in New York City, which means CMA’s Artist Instructors are hard at work in public schools across the boroughs teaching fine arts and stop-motion animation to students who lack access to the arts otherwise. Learn how you can support these programs by donating to CMA’s Emergency Arts Education Fund. Do you have a favorite memory of making art as a child? One of my favorite childhood memories is that when I was about five, my mom made a small version of our house with me out of paper. What advice would you give to young artists who wish to pursue an art practice? You're wonderful. How does working with children inspire you? I don't work with children, but do enjoy teaching college students – and very much enjoy having a child. Both things take me out of myself in a big way. Artwork by Liana's child, age 2 When did you first know you were going to be an artist? I've been drawing since I was ten months old or so. I'm not sure I ever “knew-knew” I'd be an artist, and I'm not sure I know now. Can you describe a formative experience visiting a museum or gallery? I have good memories of being taken to an earlier iteration of MoMA when I was a kid. My mom used to take me out of school once a year and we'd go to see museums in the city. We would always stop at Barnes and Noble on the Upper West Side, which is where we parked.
